A certified substance abuse professional (SAP) is a mental health provider who has been specially trained to evaluate for substance abuse and to coordinate treatment services for the client when needed. An SAP does not provide substance abuse treatment; instead, he or she meets with an individual to help a third party, often an employer, identify substance abuse and to recommend follow-up treatment(s).

SAP’s are utilized by various agencies, private companies, and governmental entities to help identify individuals with drug or alcohol abuse. These may include:

· Department of Transportation

· Child Protective Services

· Court System (judges and attorneys)

· Non-Profit Organizations

· Private Corporations

After a client is referred for assessment, the SAP notifies the referring source of the outcome of the assessment and what, if any, treatment or follow-up should be utilized. The SAP can then reassess the client after completion of treatment, etc.

Treatment recommendations may include:

· Inpatient Hospitalization

· Partial Hospitalization

· Outpatient Treatment

· Aftercare Management

In some situations, the referring entity may contract with BHC of Texarkana to provide SAP services at a contract rate. Usually, however, the referring entity requires the referred client to pay the SAP fees. Fees for SAP services are due prior to the initiation of services.
