Most formal diagnostic testing involves written and oral questions. |
|
Formal diagnostic testing involves a psychologist (Ph.D. or Psy.D.), psychological associate (Master’s Degree in psychology) licensed professional counselor (LPC) or similarly trained professional administering standardized tests to help determine what, if any, psychological diagnosis or problem areas he or she has. Diagnostic testing does not include any medical procedures. Diagnostic testing also includes a clinical interview by the practitioner to gather additional information such as medical, psychological, and social histories to aid in diagnosis. Depending on the purpose for the testing, it may involve one or multiple sessions. After testing is complete, the practitioner will meet with the client to discuss the findings and to make recommendations as to treatment, etc. Because formal diagnostic testing is relatively expensive and can be time-consuming for the client, BHC of Texarkana professionals do not automatically refer new clients for testing prior to the initiation of psychotherapeutic/counseling services. Most new psychotherapy clients undergo an initial clinical assessment with the psychotherapy provider which includes a thorough psychosocial and medical history. |
