BHC of Texarkana contracts medical social work services to area healthcare agencies and facilities.

Because the federal government recognizes the importance of medical social work, most healthcare entities are required to have access to a social worker to address psychosocial and concrete needs of patients. Medical social workers assist patients in obtaining medications and treatments that they cannot afford, determining end of life wishes, making longterm care decisions, adjusting to illness or impending death, and seeking mental health services. Many smaller agencies and facilities do not maintain a patient load that justifies employing a full-time social worker, but they need one to be accessible when needs arise.

BHC of Texarkana provides a service to area healthcare agencies and facilities by employing a pool of social workers who are available to assist patients on an “as needed” basis. Rather than carrying a social worker as an employee, agencies and facilities rely on BHC of Texarkana to contract social work services to them. This allows greater flexibility for the social workers, alleviates the problem of social work coverage if an employee takes vacation, sick, etc, and provides coverage to agencies/facilities that would otherwise not be able to provide social work services to their patients.
